'Downton' steals a number of 'Mildred's' thunder

Kate Winslet did not attempt to hide her surprise. "I did not think we would win anything," she stated onstage in declaring her trophy for HBO's "Mildred Pierce." Winslet won within the lead longform actress warmth (making her among the couple of entertainers with an Oscar, Emmy and Grammy), and Guy Pearce required supporting longform actor. The lush Todd Haynes-directed small was hardly an underdog on Sunday -- it brought all Emmy nominees this season with 21 noms -- however it was still being upstaged within the final Emmy tally by Julian Fellowes' "Downton Abbey," which required home four wins, such as the top small/movie prize. The WWI-era upstairs-downstairs drama, which initially broadcast around the BBC as well as on PBS' "Masterpiece," had great reviews but a comparatively low profile within the biz until it gained its best small Emmy nom, together with 10 other bids, in This summer. After more industryites started screening "Downton," buzz for that series started to develop. "It's a David and Goliath (situation) because you may already know Cinemax has tremendous advertising and marketing muscle behind it," stated Rebecca Eaton, "Masterpiece" professional producer. "Whenever a program like 'Downton' wins, it's on its merits." "Downton" also won for writing and director for any small or movie (for Fellowes and John Percival, correspondingly) as well as for supporting actress inside a movie/small (Maggie Cruz). Pearce expressed his disappointment for Haynes missing out within the longform pointing category, observing the helmer "is really an excellent director with your an excellent voice." Winslet also had only kind words for Haynes: "Todd was certainly greatly there for me personally like a partner for making Mildred Pierce this type of lady of magnitude and vulnerability." Although "Downton" was nommed within the longform category, it's a ongoing series. The 2nd season coincidentally bowed within the U.K. on Sunday, and can hit PBS in The month of january. "Downton" technically originates in the NBCUniversal family, because it was created through the Britain's Circus Films shingle, which NBCU bought in 2008 included in a push to grow its worldwide production procedures. The coincidence from the timing of "Downton's" Emmy triumph wasn't lost on Fellowes, who won a screenwriting Oscar about ten years ago for "Gosford Park." He noted his fortune in honours races by saying thanks to "the American industry" in accepting his writing award for "Downton." "10 years ago, you kickstarted my second career by having an Oscar," Fellowes stated. "Tonight you've nurtured it." Contact Cynthia Littleton at cynthia.littleton@variety.com
